According to statistics from the Brazil Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), Brazil’s scrap exports totaled around 54,000 tons in December 2021, slightly falling by 0.9% compared to the previous month but soaring by 236.4% from the same month a year ago.
In 2021, Brazil’s scrap exports amounted to approximately 509,400 tons, a year-on-year decrease of 30.3%. Among them, the exports to Bangladesh accounted for the largest proportion at 34% of the total, followed by India’s 28% and Pakistan’s 13%.
In terms of imports, Brazil’s scrap imports in December 2021 had a month-on-month decrease of 93.7% and a year-on-year drop of 93.8%, totaling roughly 2,060 tons.
In the whole year of 2021, Brazil’s scrap imports amounted to around 244,700 tons, soaring by 169% year on year. Among them, the US was the main supplier with a share of 43%, Canada ranked second with 27%, followed by Germany’s share of 7.4%.
