Brazilian steel mill Gerdau planned to invest US$210 million to expand its special steel capacity. The company invested US$140 million in the Pindamonhangaba steel plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and invested US$7 million in a steel plant in Michigan, US.
The new continuous casting equipment of Pindamonhangaba Steel Plant mainly provided steel products with lighter weight and stronger resistance to the automobile industry and the crude oil natural gas market.
After the expansion of the steel plant, it was expected to start producing crude steel in 2020, with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons, which was higher than the current 620,000 tons.
The steel mill currently produced steel, special steel, bar and other items. In the future, new construction in Brazil will begin, and market demand was expected to increase significantly.
As for the steel mills in Michigan, the company will be more modern after the capital increased. At present, it mainly produced steel bars and special steel bars with an annual production capacity of 600,000 tons.
Gerdau estimated that demand for special steel in Brazil will reach 1.1 million tons in 2019, an annual increase of 160,000 tons; demand in North America was expected to reach 5.84 million tons, an annual increase of 3.7%.
