Mr YPS Suri calls for usage of stainless steel to avoid Majerhat Bridge collapse type accidents-The 20th China (Guangzhou) Int’l Spring Industry Exhibition

Experts expressing concern at collapse of Majerahat Bridge on busy Diamond Harbour road in South Kolkata have stressed on the need of use of corrosion resistant sustainable materials including stainless steel reinforcement while constructing bridges and infrastructure in coastal areas including Kolkata. Mr Yatinder Pal Singh Suri, , Managing Director and India Head of Outokumpu India, one of the largest stainless steel making company in the world and Chairman of Plant Process Machinery Association of India (PPMAI) and former President of IIT Kharagpur Alumni Association said "Corrosion mitigation is a national mission with full support from our Prime Minister which is amply demonstrated through his slogan of Zero Effect and Zero Defect. Sincere efforts of steel ministry to introduce life cycle cost aspects with use of sustainable materials in construction in government projects which led to amendments in General Finance Rules 2017 which mandates use of sustainable products in our project tenders. Therefore the technical teams in Highways and Railways must abandon their preference for commercial considerations which generally means compromising on technical grounds. The selection of the right stainless steel materials will eliminate corrosion in a given corrosive environment. The new BIS code also mandates selection on the basis of corrosive levels of the operating environment.”
Mr Suri said "The technical heads must remain technical and support corrosion mitigation procedures. The recent bridge collapse in Majerhat Kolkatta as well as collapse of Railway overhead bridges in Mumbai would never happen, if sustainable materials were used. The project cost may go up initially by 10-15% through use of sustainable duplex stainless steel for concrete and structural bridges but the maintenance free life of upto hundred years will mean highest human safety and lowest life cycle cost to the nation with no disruption of infrastructure facilities created . Duplex grade 2304 is an ideal grade for fighting corrosion due to high chloride and carbonation levels in coastal cities and railway networks and highways. Moreover the Coastal areas experience high ambient temperatures soaring upto 45-50 degrees Celsius. This is a dangerous combination which corrodes carbon steel very fast. We must learn from UAE where Duplex grades are widely used and their environmental conditions are similar to our coastal areas."
He said “We must learn lessons from developed nations to ensure human safety and provide robust and corrosion free solutions in infrastructure to our countrymen. Tragedy like today would have been averted if Stainless Steel reinforcement rebars would have been used in the bridge, which crosses rail line.”
