Auto body calls for cost benefit analysis before mandating galvanised steel in auto bodies-The 20th China(Guangzhou) Die-casting, Foundry & Industry Furnace Exhibition

Economic Times reported that Automotive Research Association of India has suggested that the Indian government should undertake an exhaustive cost benefit analysis before taking any decision on use of galvanised steel in auto bodies. Responding to the road transport and highways ministry’s proposal to make it mandatory for auto companies to use 70% of galvanised steel in cars in line with global norms, the official vehicle testing agency recommended a detailed cost-benefit analysis first as India is a cost-sensitive market. ARAI said “We understand with use of galvanised steel corrosion issues will be reduced. To study its impact, it is necessary to evaluate the extent of galvanised steel used in a car body and the period of warranty offered in India vis-a-vis the international market. Requisite data may be sought from vehicle manufacturers in India.”
The Nitin Gadkari-led ministry had earlier in June 2018 sought ARAI''s views on its proposal. The ministry has also requested other expert agencies such as International Centre for Automotive Technology Manesar, to study the proposal and prepare a report. The ministry’s proposal, under corrosion prevention rule for motor vehicles, pertains to cars made in India and costing less than INR 10 lakh. It is based on a study conducted by NT Mumbai in 2015, which pointed to corrosion affecting durability and safety of cars in India. More recently, a joint study by International Zinc, Hindustan Zinc and IIT Mumbai conducted in humid regions of Chennai in March 2018 on imperfections in 5 to 10 year-old vehicles, showed a close correlation between surface rust and age of car.
