Republicain Lorrain reported that Saarstahl AG is injecting EUR 100 million into the construction of a new continuous casting plant at its site in Völklingen. Launched in November 2017, the impressive construction site will be completed at the end of the year. Martin Baues, technical director made a mid-term inventory. 125 companies operate on the site, 70% of which come from Saarland. 200 people work there simultaneously; in the end, 800 people will have been involved in the implementation of the project.
In Völklingen, Saarstahl operates four plants where raw steel in the liquid state is poured into billets (metal masses in the form of square, rectangular or round bars, Ed.). Their rolling or extrusion makes it possible to obtain long metallic products of small sections (metal wires, bars, profiles, etc.). The semi-finished product is then machined in the factories of Neunkirchen, Burbach and Völklingen. The new five-strand facility, named S1, replaces a structure that was shut down in 2010.
To guarantee the regular cooling of the billets from 6 to 13.5 meters long, without any deformation, the project involves the construction of a cooling bed with a turning system stretching over 100 m. It will contain 320 bars against 150 currently.
