Metalloinvest and MISiS creating laboratory to develop new steel grades- The 19th China（Guangzhou）Int’l Sheet metal machinery,Forging, Stamping and Setting Equipment Exhibition

OEMK (part of Metalloinvest) and the AA. Ugarov Stary Oskol Technological Institute, a branch of the National University of Science and Technology MISiS, are creating a steel-smelting laboratory at OEMK. The launch of the laboratory will enable Metalloinvest to accelerate and reduce costs associated with the process of developing new high-quality steel grades. The core of the laboratory will be a vacuum induction melting furnace with a maximum capacity of 60 kg. The laboratory enables its operators to efficiently conduct experimental smelting in small volumes, which is impossible in OEMK''s 150-tonne industrial furnaces. The first experimental smelting has already been carried out at the new furnace.
The steel smelting laboratory allows for the production of special steel grades and complex alloys. Vacuum treating the steel will enable specialists to remove impurities consisting of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, as well as micro-impurities of non-ferrous metals, to produce high-purity steel meeting the requirements of special metallurgy.
Mr Andrey Ugarov, First Deputy CEO, COO, Management Company Metalloinvest, commented that "The new laboratory will enable OEMK to solve practically any issue related to the development of new steel grades, which are highly in demand on the global high-quality rolled steel market."
Mr Vasily Rassolov Director of the Stary Oskol Technological Institute, added that "This joint steel-smelting laboratory will support the synergy between OEMK and our institute. OEMK needs to develop new steel grades, and the specialists at our institute can meet this need by applying their metallurgical knowledge and conducting experiments."
