Royal Navy urged to buy British steel for new warship-The 19th China (Guangzhou ) Int’l Casting product Exhibition

Mirror UK quoted ministers as saying that building the Royal Navy''s latest warship with foreign steel would be “clearly wrong”. Defence experts are drawing up designs for a new Type 31e light frigate. Five GBP 250million vessels will be built but the Tories have refused to guarantee British steel will be used.
UK Steel director Gareth Stace said that “For all Government procurement it''s vitally important that the Government looks at value rather than cost …. particularly in terms of UK defence. It''s clearly the wrong message to send out that the UK defence sector would use anything but steel from the UK if steel from the UK is available.”
Ministers have previously blamed British steelmakers for not making specific types of metal needed in bumper defence deals.
But industry insiders have repeatedly called on the Government to say from an early stage what it needs so, if UK mills do not already produce it, bosses can decide whether to invest in machinery to win contracts.
Mr Stace said that “What we need in place is a better system than we have at the moment. “We don''t get a long term sense of the pipeline for what is needed for these long-term projects.”
