Last week U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker toured AFS partner institute America Makes as a part of a three-state tour of the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI) institutes.
The NNMI institutes bring together regional business, academic, community, and government leaders to leverage assets, share risks, and lower costs in developing whole new fields of innovative products that can be sold across the globe. In addition, small manufacturers can test their ideas, and students and workers can train on state-of-the art equipment.
During the stop at the Youngstown, Ohio, hub, AFS was one of the 146 groups represented during a roundtable discussion with Pritzker. Following the discussion and a tour of the institute, Pritzker said America Makes “is not only a nice-to-have, it is a must-have,” referring to the institutes potential impact on the U.S. economy.
AFS Member Humtown Products, in Columbiana, Ohio, also participated in the roundtable. America Makes “gives a small company like Humtown the ability to come and meet the people that are key in these large organizations,” Brandon Lamoncha, sales manager/solutions provider, Humtown, said afterward.
The Youngstown center was launched in 2012 as the pilot project for a network of manufacturing hubs in which government, private industry, academia and nongovernmental organizations collaborate to improve and develop commercial uses of new technology.
Headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill., AFS is a not-for-profit technical and management society that has existed since 1896 to provide and promote knowledge and services that strengthen the metalcasting industry for the ultimate benefit of its customers and society.
